Photosynthesis, from this week's science class. Plants make their own food. They take in carbon dioxide from the air through small holes in their leaves called stomata. They take in water from the soil through their roots. Inside the leaf, in parts of the cell called chloroplasts, a green substance called chlorophyll absorbs light from the sun. Using that light energy, the plant combines the carbon dioxide and the water to make glucose, which is a sugar the plant uses for energy and growth. Oxygen is made as well and is released back into the air through the stomata. Almost all of the oxygen in the air we breathe was made this way. The word equation is: carbon dioxide plus water, with light energy, gives glucose plus oxygen. Photosynthesis stops in the dark, because there is no light energy to drive it. Plants also carry out respiration, using glucose and oxygen to release energy, and they do that day and night.
